What do you give your mum to reward constant service, late night dinners, emergency courier and transport work and regular and last minute baby-sitting?  What to give the mums that are also now doing duty as grandmas and nanas.

 And, on the side, as a mum of two small kids, what to expect?!?

    Keep expectations low. Avoid disappointment.

    Give: love and respect, worthy appreciation

    Expect: nothing

    My Mum, actually gave her elderly mother inlaw, one year a book of I IOU’s. It was for window cleaning, going to the tip, cleaning out spouting. Pruning trees. etc. All the jobs that sometimes its nice to call on someone else for. It was really well recieved, and cost - time…..what price that?

    I’d rather give/treat random suprises/gifts through out the year than make a fuss over a commercial claptrap day.
    Likewise my kids can do the same eg: my 14 year old son brings me a cup of tea most weekday mornings to wake me up, thats worth a million “mothers day” presents.

    I love a funny card, and a good cup of tea, which is what I’ll be hoping for this Mother’s Day. Mums don’t do their job for rewards. There are gifts in giving, don’t you think?

    The best Mother’s Day I gave my mum was some much needed time to herself. No I don’t mean we all just up and left her on her own, but I filled the bath with bubblebath and bath salts, but on some relaxing music and handed her the book she was reading at the time. She absolutely loved it, some time to herself. While she was relaxing dad cooked dinner. I’ve never been able to come up with anything good since then, just the usual mothers day gifts but every year she still mentions that mothers day.

    A good idea is a massage voucher! They’re $50 or so (if that’s too expensive, you can go in with a sibling to pay for it, or if that’s too cheap, you can go to a more expensive massage place or buy her dinner as well). It’s thoughtful without being materialistic, and implies that you realise how much effort she puts into being a good mum :)

    Failing that, The Body Shop has some good prezzies.

    When’s mother’s day?

    Mothers’ Day gift - send your swam of children to the Mothers’ Day stall at primary school and you will be smothered with a heap of useless presents. I don’t know about you but I would rather be smothered with kisses and cuddles on Fathers’ Day.

    Okay - Mothers’ Day is Sunday the 13th - that’s 8 days to plan, plot, make and create to spoil your Mum (or help your kids spoil theirs!)

    Love the iou idea!! Anything given by kids with an excited smile on their faces is priceless - even soggy toast and sloshed over lukewarm tea (my two are far too small for boiling water!). Kinder teachers send home great stuff like laminated kids’ artwork bookmarks and coasters. I agree that something they made will always make you smile.

    Don’t know why the school Mothers’ Day stalls are so bad sometimes - especially when it’s usually the mums that organise them!!

    Thanks guys, looks like the best pressies are experiences, personal time and luxuries (time is a luxury!).

    Hehehe some great ideas on here! coolbunny - I remember when I was in primary school and dad would give me my $5 to “get mummy something special” at the Mother’s Day stall at school!

    This year, my boyfriend and I decided to make our mum’s a “MUM SURVIVAL KIT,” which included:
    * a magazine
    * a pack of camomile teas
    * a mini money box with “BINGO MONEY” written on the front of it
    * a few little chocolates
    * a chocolate pudding
    * an aromatherapy candle & matches
    * a mini bottle of champage

    We bought all of our stuff, 2 gift boxed and a bit of tissue paper and put it all together!! Hopefully they like them!

    Here is what I will give my mummy:
    Joop purfume
    Soap - better than solvo
    Toothpaste - better than Colgate
    Shampoo - better than Wella Balsam
    And I will buy her a tub of King Island yoghurt - yummmm - just as well my mummy doesn’t like yoghurt.
