I have been invited to Emirate Stakes Day and since this is the first time I have accepted an invitation to the races I  have no idea what to expect - or what is expected of me!  What do I wear - do I really have to get a hat!?  Are we really going to spend all day in a carpark and is this honestly going to be good fun?

Please share your insight and experiences fellow nooksters!

The carpark is pretty much just an outdoor party. Much mingling, much drinking, much eating and then more drinking. Go with an open mind and a closed wallet would be my advice. If you want to bet do so before going to the track. Yeah, wear a hat. I’m a bloke but the girls tell me fascinators are out of fashion, so sounds like you should go for the real thing. (Something that actually shields you from the sun might be good, but don’t shock the fashonistas by suggesting that the hat should have any practical purpose).
The girls tend to end up carrying their shoes at the end of the day rather than wearing them, which always seems odd to me. I suppose dress to impress but try to also find a pair of shoes that won’t get too uncomfortable as the long day goes on.

If you want to smuggle booze in, put it in salad dressing bottles (do try and colour coordinate with the actual colour the salad dressings would be) in your picnic hamper.

    Like your new avatar gadfly.

I used to work at Flemington some moons ago and rReally I reckon you can wear anything, but glam is better and a hat is good but not necessary.

Nooknook is right wear you most comfortable pair of glam shoes ‘cos it’s amazing the number of women you see walking ’round at the end of the day with their shoes in their hands.

It’s up to you if you want to spent all day in the carpark personally I reckon if your at the races you should at least be watching some of them and the horses and the pagentry of it all looks great.

And I would partake of alchol sparingly ‘cos there is nothing more unglamorous than the glamorous woman staggering around at the end of the day, make up smeared, hair messed, hat crocked, dress creased and dishevelled, caught up in her undies (thats of course if she’s wearing any) vomitting in a corner.

Most importantly have a great time, put some bets on and hopfully you may end up richer.

Unfortunately you can’t construct a salad from alcohol, so you’ll have to actually bring a real one to make the dressing bottles look convincing… but if you have a syringe try injecting vodka into any tomatoes in the salad.
Another idea is to bring a clear plastic tub filled with cut up orange pieces - partially soaked in some kind of alcohol, of course. Nothing’s healthier than fresh fruit!

Mmm - maybe a whole watermelon which has previously had a bottle of vodka upended in it …. this could turn out to be more fun than I thought!! :)

I had to spend seven hours in the members carpark for the Cox plate, and if I have to see much more bouncing ugly fat on over 40s, and drunken under 40s teetering around on flimsy bits of cardboard substituting for shoes I will throw up!!!!!
